Jean Arthaud de la Ferrière

Biography
Jean Arthaud de la Ferrière
Jean Arthaud, born in 1613 in Les Hières, embodies one of the most remarkable social ascents of the 17th century in Dauphiné. From a modest mountain family, he moved to Lyon where he rapidly climbed the ranks of municipal administration, eventually becoming an alderman (échevin) of Lyon in 1662. This position offered not only prestige but also personal nobility. Despite his honors, Jean Arthaud remained deeply attached to his homeland. He bequeathed considerable sums for the education of children from La Grave and founded a school in his native commune. He also bequeathed his house in Les Hières to be transformed into a chapel, known today as the Chapel of the Penitents of Saint Bartholomew.
