Amable Rome
Biography
Born in La Grave on June 12, 1781, into a family of the Dauphiné petty bourgeoisie, Amable Rome — simply called "Doctor Rome" — is one of the most admirable figures from the village. After studying in Grenoble and then Paris, where he became a doctor of medicine in 1806, he distinguished himself by his knowledge as much as by his kindness. He practiced in Briançon and served under the Empire before settling permanently in Voreppe. There, he tirelessly treated all who came to him, rich or poor, often offering food and clothing in addition to care. His humanity deeply inspired his contemporaries: many see in him the model for Doctor Benassis, the hero of Balzac's novel "The Country Doctor". Amable Rome died in Voreppe on May 19, 1850, faithful to the end to his motto engraved on his tomb: "Pertransiit benefaciendo" — He went about doing good.
