Event narrative
After the troubled period of the Merovingian Frankish kingdoms, the Carolingians reunited the Frankish kingdoms. In 800, Charlemagne was crowned emperor in Rome, giving birth to an immense empire. The upper Romanche valley then found itself at the geographical heart of this empire, far from unstable frontiers. It was also the time when feudal structures were put in place: local powers, lordships, rights of use, organization of lands and mountain pastures, all prefiguring the future communal life of Mizoën. The Early Middle Ages nevertheless remained troubled. In 889, Saracen bands reached Briançon and plundered the town. Given the strategic importance of the Lautaret Pass, it cannot be ruled out that these incursions affected the edges of Mizoën's territory.
