Event narrative
Between 1562 and 1598, the Dauphiné was ravaged by the Wars of Religion: towns and villages besieged, captured and recaptured by rival factions. In this turmoil, the ruthless Lesdiguières established himself as leader of the Reformation in Dauphiné. He stayed several times in Villar-d’Arène, had the church of La Grave demolished then fortified, and went so far as to buy back the two communes on November 6, 1593.
