Event narrative
Oisans was very poor. In 1250, there were only four knights in the entire region. In Villar-d’Arène, a small local nobility was replaced by officials of the Dauphin and then the King. A document from 1339 attests that the nobles André de Vaunariers and the heirs of Jean Bérard owned fortified houses in Villar-d’Arène. Modest as they were, they remained far more comfortable than the surrounding thatched cottages.
