Lautaret Pass Road, Villar-d'Arène - Old Automobile

This photograph, taken by Émile Duchemin (1862-1914) in June 1906, shows an old automobile on the way to the Lautaret Pass, in Villar-d'Arène. It offers a fascinating glimpse of the early days of the automobile in this region. One can particularly notice the presence of the rods along the road, used to mark the road in bad weather. At the time, they were not plastic, but were real wooden pylons several meters high.
