The Legend of the Washerwomen Fairies

The Legend's Story
Long ago, fairies came to wash their linen in the Romanche River. On the sunny side (adret) lived blonde fairies dressed in white; on the dark side (ubac) lived dark-haired, dark fairies. The blonde fairies often mocked their cousins for being "strange." One day, a blonde fairy insulted the baby of a dark fairy: "Look at this child! Even uglier than its mother!" The mother warned her to stop, but the mockery continued. That evening, when the blonde fairy returned home, she found a dark, slimy creature in her cradle instead of her own rosy baby. The moral remains: respect others, for mockery has unexpected consequences.
