The Mystery of the Rosettes

The Legend's Story
In the valley, traditional chests and animal collars are often adorned with complex rosettes. Scholar Paul-Louis Rousset suggests these are sun symbols—survivals of ancient Alpine solar cults. With Romanization, this cult merged with Apollo, the sun god. The rosette acted as a protective symbol to ward off evil spirits, explaining why it was carved into daily objects for millennia.
