Chapelle Saint-Jean-Baptiste du Pied du Col

Information
The Saint-Jean-Baptiste chapel of Pied du Col is a religious building whose history dates back at least to the 17th century. Although it is not mentioned in the old writings of the locals, a chapel dedicated to Notre-Dame-de-Pitié is attested in the same place in 1676. In 1712, this chapel is adorned with a statue of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, and the current building bears the date of 1646, suggesting that it could be the same building. The chapel has undergone significant repairs over the years, notably between 1694 and 1701, where masons from the Aosta Valley rebuilt the walls, the roof and the bell tower. The choir was also enlarged. The lime came from Briançon and the slates from Besse. The chapel was limewashed in 1714 by a Savoyard mathe younger and the windows were closed with oiled paper in 1737. Other repairs took place in 1927, with a new slate roof from La Grave and windows fitted with glass panes. One can note the presence of inscriptions, such as '1646' engraved on a corner stone of the wall and '1895' on the door wood.
