Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes

Biography
Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes
Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes, a French writer, poet, playwright, and painter, left an indelible mark on 20th-century art history. Around 1915, alongside Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia, he was one of the precursors in Paris of what would be named "Dada" by Tristan Tzara in Zurich in 1916. Ribemont-Dessaignes played a crucial role in the emergence of this revolutionary movement. From 1920, he actively participated in all Dada activities, pushing the limits of the absurd and the random in his theatrical and musical creations. After the war, he became more discreet, moving away from Parisian life. With his wife, he ran an inn in Villar-d'Arène, in the Dauphiné, starting in 1934. "La Maison du Villar," as their inn was named, became a meeting place for exchange where Ribemont-Dessaignes commented on current events, read, drew, and listened to the radio. He left behind a unique artistic legacy, witness to a bubbling and avant-garde era.
