The Treasure of the Italian Wars
The Legend's Story
During the 16th-century Italian Wars, a soldier hid his looted booty under a large stone at Pont Long, fearing he would be abandoned. He died before retrieving it. An "Esprit Follet" (Imp), a greedy creature known for raising brown mares with silver bells, took possession of it. Centuries later, two brave men tried to steal it at night. Near the bridge, they heard an infernal carriage. The Imp coachman was whipping his mares, the silver bells piercing the night. Terrified, the men hid under the bridge as the Imp let out a bone-chilling laugh above them. They fled and never tried to touch the goblin's gold again.
